AfriSalsa's DID YOU KNOW? --------------------------------------

Although West African rhythms mixed with Spanish music in Cuba to create the roots of salsa music, what's most important to remember is all over the world, music and dance has been used to bond communities and assist in changing the world.

Did you know that in the 1960's, in New York, the Latin American & African American communities overlapped and showed support for one another during the birth of the term "salsa". The African American community born dance "the boogaloo" influenced the creation of the Latin Boogaloo which later contributed to the development of salsa. Latin Boogaloo music was recorded in Spanish and English at times to promote solidarity with the Civil Right's Movement.

paragraph 6 page 9.

Excerpt: " ... In those years, the mid 60's, a new dance style emerged among African Americans called the boogaloo, which inspried the Latinos to create the fusion known as Latin boogaloo... Some of them even used lyrics in English and Spanish, and were able to cross the boundaries between the different cultures. Significantly, in 1967 they managed to have an impact on African Americans, since in the midst of the Civil Rights movement some of the lyrics of Latin boogaloo voiced solidarity with thier cause... AfriSalsa Beginner Salsa Classes

Schedule a group class or private lessons today!!

SALSA DANCING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS & PEOPLE NEW TO A CITY

1. Dont be afraid to ask people to dance. Even if the first and second person says "no" keep asking and have fun with who you are dancing with.

2. Don't assume your partner is not having fun with you. JUST DANCE.

3. Be friendly. Sometimes fear makes you seem unfriendly and most people are salsa dancing to have fun.

4. LOOK LIKE YOU WANT TO DANCE WITH SOMEONE. Have fun and dance on your own before being asked so you look inviting. If you stand there and think "I won't get a dance" all night long, you may not get one.

5. Remember, its not about tricks its about the connection to the music and your partner. Dont stress yourself NOR your partner out worrying about tricks.

6. The best lesson is actual dancing. Private lessons and group classes are great because you get tips you may not get any other time. But actual dancing and feeling the music is the best lesson. Feel your partner and concentrate less on making your tricks look good.

7. PLAY YOUR ROLE WELL! If you are a leader... your role is to "guide your partner into happiness". If you are a follower, your role is "to be guided into happiness". Follow if you are a follower and lead if you are a leader. you will be able to have more fun,8. Respect and learn the culture of each place you visit to dance.

9. Try to learn more than one "style" or rhythm (on1 and on2) it makes no sense to love salsa and not know th basics of multiple styles. Its easier when you learn to lead and follow WELL.

FYI's for those new to salsa: There are large events around the world similar to coventions called a"congress". At Salsa Congresses salsa dancers come from all over to learn and share their love of salsa and other dances through classes, social dancing and performances. MANY of the cogresses are very beginner friendly. To find out more visit some of the AfriSalsa family members' websites and inquire! The best part is you get to meet lots of great people and travel!
